Climate control blower motor. 850

I have a 1993 850 GLT, and the blower motor works when it feels like it. if the switch is in the on position when the car is started, it comes on for a few minutes and then shuts off. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this, becasue I'm hoping its just a bad relay and not something more serious.

If you take off the plastic shin guard on the passenger side (three torx screws on the lower upper edge- look for a couple relays under there. One is blue or green and the other is black. The blue or green one will fail if too much moisture gets on the fan or maybe just from use. This can cause the 4 speed to never work mostly and sometimes what you describe. Dealer order part for about 48.00.

The other thing is the blower motor resistor near the fan...for a picture of it go to www.speedycarparts.com and find the blower motor resistor under climate control. It's a 72.00 part. A little tricky to replace as you don't have alot of working room with the torx. I just used the bit itself and a wrench to get the torx out. If your blower motor itself turns out to be bad, buy a bottle of excedrin and buy some knee pads and a 12 pack of bud. It's a saturday kind of job.

If you move the switch all to way to the right, full speed, does it work? If so, it could just be a bad fuse, or the voltage regulator for the fan could be at fault. The regulator is on the firewall close to the blower.

Check the codes in B - 1.

Please answer your responses. We need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)

I removed the knee bolster, and had a look at the relay under the dash. I removed them, and checked the contacts, and put them back in. The blower seems to be working fine for now, but I still have the bolster out, becuase I want to make sure it's working for a while before I put it all back together.

Thanks,

Kyle

Kyle:

I don't know what the black relay does, but if you pry the cover off the blue or green one, you will see the little armature energize when you move the switch to postion 4. If the little bugger doesn't move, or if you see alot of melted stuff under the cap, head to the dealer for a new one.
