Some questions

Hello all,

I have some questions about my 2002 V70 2.4T automatic.

1. I've read some negative stuff about automatic transmissions in the V70's from 2001 and 02. My car only has about 65000 kms done so far and I have not experienced problems yet, however I think it kicks in very late when I put it into 'drive' (about 1 or 2 seconds), but that's maybe normal? Can anyone tell me if I should worry about my automatic transmission? I also read about software updates for the transmission, does this als apply to Belgian cars? And how do I know if the car already had an update (without asking my dealer)?
2. Does anyone have experience with mounting a multimedia system into this car (or similar Volvo's)? Installers are not keen to built screens into the headrests nor it is possible to mount a screen onto the roof because I have a sunroof. Several say they cannot make the head unit work with the steering wheel buttons, because the manufacturers don't provide the right connections. I've looked at Kenwood and Pioneer so far (because they have double din head units with touch screens), any other suggestions?

If you want to know anything about my LPG-conversion, just shoot.

Uturn2.

    Some questions

If the transmission is very slow to engage, then it could very well be a software problem. There is no way to tell if the software has been updated without going to a dealer, and no other way to update the software anyway. Most of the upgrades in the USA are bcause the tranny does not go to 1st gear nicely after stopping.
As far as multimedia, you mean playing video for the rear seat passengers? Our local super stores, Walmart, sell video players with 2 screens that hook over the head rest. The base can be attached anywhere and plugs into the cigarette lighter in the back of the center console.

      Some questions

      Hi Klaus,

Transmission: it works fine, but when switching it from N to D it takes a second or two before I feel the thump of it kicking in (sorry if I speak rubbish, English is not my native language). It may be normal, but the user's manual doesn't have any info on it. (Actually, I only just found out I can put the trans into reverse while still rolling forwards and vica versa... My 965 couldn't do that. Makes parking a whole lot easier LOL) I'll talk to my dealer about the software though.

Multimedia: We have that here too, but i'm actually looking for something to built in and not to hook on. Now I fabricated a standard to put my laptop onto, and I use a cassette-adapter to hear the sound on my radio-system.

      uturn2.

        Some questions

We just got out email system back. The brickboard had not sent any for a while.

DO NOT shift the tranny while the car is rolling!!! That will break it, really fast. That only applies to when you are changing direction, forward or reverse of course. It is a cute American teenager trick to go backwards quickly, shift to D and give it gas. The rear wheels start to spin forward while the car is still moving backwards, generating a lot of tire smoke and noise. If you do that with an AW transmilssion, it will break.

So, before you shift it from D to R, or R to D, make sure the car is stopped.

You might want to check the level of the transmission fluid. Do it when everything is hot and the car in Park with the engine running.

          Some questions

Thanks Claus for your respons, and your warning.

I only shift(ed!) from D straight to R at very very low speed, and only when parking. I'm now very curious why this could break the automatic gearbox.

Actually, I only started doing it when I saw my brother doing it with his (company-owned) Ford C-Max with a tiptronic-gearbox... he can even put it in reverse while driving 60km/h without breaking it (or without smashing my brother into the windshield for that matter, the gearbox just refuses to go into reverse).

I've checked my driver's manual several times before even attempting to shift it like that at very very low speed when parking. There's not one remark in it about making a full stop before putting it from D to R or the other way around nor the risk of breaking the gearbox if you ignore to do that, while the manual of my 960 explicitly did have. As if it is common knowledge nowadays. So, without questioning your remark, that is quite weird, isn't it?

            Some questions

My Dad had a 1959 Ford with a 2 speed automatic. I was with him once when he missed a turnoff at 120Kph. He put the car in reverse and floored it! Needless to say, we did stop and then proceded to go backwards rather quickly. Two months later, the tranny was rebuilt.
Yes, people do that. And transmissions are not built to do that. The AW trannys in our cars are not that rugged and cannot shift pressure fast enough. It is also harmful to "rock" the car back and forth when stuck in snow. So do not get into a habit of shifting before stopping.

In the USA, we cannot easily obtain LPG to use in our cars, so there are no "kits" available. The state does not like it if it does not get taxes from our fuel use. Currently, most of our diesel fuel is high sulphur and suitable for large trucks, not normal passenger cars. But it is coming... or, if we are lucky, hydrogen will be made available and we can convert to that.
