96 855 turbo AC compressor DIY or TECHNICIAN JOB?

Add this to the recent glut of AC related questions::How tough is it to replace an AC compressor? I have a reasonable amount of knowledge and do many "bolt off/bolt on" repairs on my own, but AC is not something I know a whole lot about. I have a good assortment of tools and access to pretty much anything I'd need. Is there a step by step guide anywhere or should I just borrow the service manual and give it a shot?

also any resources for good quality remanufactured or more affordable new compressors would be great. just spent a bundle having the evaporator replaced and don't need another 800 dollar job on top of that.

Just curious, how did you deduce that the compressor died? Most of these run for a long time, but the clutch plate may need to be tightened.

If you remove the compressor, also get a new dryer. You can do everything but vacuum out the system and recharge it. Leave that to an AC shop.

I recently had it in the shop for the evaporator replacement (ooof) and that was a load of $$. It blew cold for a while but on the first 90+ degree day here it was kicking off and on, symptoms of the clutch not engaging properly. I brought it back to the tech (I trust this guy and he has done a lot of good work for me) and he said "compressor" and I said "what about if it's just the clutch" and he said "if we do a clutch, we do a compressor". He's kind of anal when it comes to not having to do repairs twice. so that's where I'm at. Is the clutch a replacable item or is there a better way of dealing with this?
