The Dreaded 'Service' Light 850 1996

Sigh, just when I thought I had the car perfectly repaired...briefly problem free for at least 3 weeks this time...

I got the mysterious "service" light up on the dash this morning, and now every time I start the car. It stays on for about a minute and then goes off. So far it hasn't come on at any other time than at start up.

I know, I probably need to have it decoded at the dealer...but I was hoping someone could put forth a theory or two.

I looked at the usual suspects...gas cap, hoses, air box, fuel evap...all seems okay. It might also have something to do with the fact that we are pushing 115 degrees fahrenheit these days.

    you can:
    a) put a piece of black tape on that part of the dash.
    b) if you ever need to take the instrument cluster out (eg to replace bulbs), remove the bulb

It's just a reminder that your car needs servicing (oil change, etc.) It's set off by pre-determined distance, driving hours or total elapsed time.

I just ignore mine, since it goes off after a minute or so.

Not a trouble indicator. It's programmed to come on every XX miles or ? The dealer can set it to never come on.

      Thanks! Good to know.

Does it have to be a volvo dealer? Or can most other mechs shut it off?

I would think anyone with an an obd2 tool could turn it off. Maybe kragens or auto zone. The scanner program I have allows me to turn off the service light from my home computer.

Any dealer can as long as they can adapt to a Volvo. Silly tool is $700.

The home depot solution works well. Get a roll of black electrician's tape for about a buck, cut a small square and put it over the light. The reset tool is expensive so expect to pay $25. + to have it reset unless you're a regular customer at your mechanic's garage. Just another way for volvo to squeeze a little more outa you.
