AC shuts off and engine gets too hot 850

Have problem with engine overheating and AC cuts off. Fan comes on with AC but when hot seems to shut off. Don't hear fan after shutting motor off to cool engine like it used to. Temperature gets hot enough to shut off AC.Don't want to burn up engine..I understand that there are many sensors so I ran the fault codes-- Got one fault #414--drivers side interior temperature sensor- But I don't think that this would cause the engine to overheat? Does anyone have any info on where the sensors are in a '94 850 turbo?
Just had the knock sensors replaced at the Volvo dealer(ouch!) and know the gas mileage is down. From reading info on the net, I wonder if they have done something to the ETC sensor, which I read is near the knock guys.Does the ETC sensor send out an error code?
From reading the posts I know that KlausC is very knowledgeable about these cars!Maybe he has suggestion or info to help me check out these AC sensors? My head hurts! Help!!

If the temp gauge in the instrument panel goes up from normal, then it is the ECT that needs to be "checked". And that is not anywhere near the knock sensors. An error code would have been generated if the ECT were unplugged. The ECT is on the passenger side, behind the power steering pump and under the thermostat housing. It can be checked with a multi meter do determine the Ohms by temperature.

What could be at fault is a relay for the fan. Check for loose wires under the fan shroud. An errant elbow could have nudged it out of the way. Especially if the fan was removed during the knock sensor replacement.

The 414 can be checked by taking off the grab handle and the cover plate, then starting the car. The little fan should turn quickly. The whole sensor does come out, gently, and can be cleaned with a toothpick, and reinserted. Just make sure the little fan turns before you button it back up.

The coolant sensor under the thermostat tends to go out and it sends a lot of information which can shut down the AC and cause fans to do strange things. Your interior temp sensor is located above the grab handle on that model, I believe. Some times they get blocked with debris and need to be vacuumed out.

    Good luck,

    dick

Hey, thank you guys for your help.. I'll try to get the inside sensor checked myself and get my friend to help me check the ECT..I'm smarter than I was.. Thanks again.
