Tire Recommendations? 850 1996

My 96 850 fell victim to the infamous 96 strut mount issues. I finally had it all fixed by volvo (a whopping 1000 dollars to replace the mounts, struts, and redo the alignment)..but the damage was done to my tires already. The outside shoulder on the front driver side was bald, and the toe was totally out.

Surprisingly, I got 50 k out of my cheap Dorals despite the abuse and am considering getting those again.

I live in heat stricken AZ and do mostly freeway driving. I am not looking for performance so much as longevity and durability. AZ summers do a real number on tires, blowouts are common and our highways are littered with exploded rubber and threads. As an 850 driver, I also SPEEEEED!

I would love to hear what other 850 drivers are riding on and if they are happy with it. Also, any tire disasters??

    Tire Recommendations? 850 1996

My wife drives our 1997 850 GLT and I have been very unhappy with every tire we have tried. Several rounds of Michelin energy's would only last 20,000. So I decided to go cheaper. Our Falkens lasted less than 20,000. I currently have Goodrich TA Traction and those are looking like they won't last 20k either.

I went with the Kumho Solus tires. Amazing! They are quiet and even better than the Dorals I had when they were new. MPG remains to be seen, but so far it seems better.

I wanted the Falkens but they were out of stock. If anyone else has had these tires for a long period of time, let me know what your experience is.

You didn't mention fuel economy among your criteria, but if you care, you might search for low rolling resistance tires. The (expensive) Michelin Energy MXV or the (cold weather) Nokians qualify, but there are some reasonable Continentals, Bridgestones, and Dunlops out there. Expect a few percent better mpg.

google 'low rolling resistance tires' or check out the link below.

If you want a nice road tire, with a decent level of performance, and don't want to spend a fortune, try the Falken ZEIX 512's (sometimes ZE-512 or Z 512). I am on my second set of them; and got over 75K out of the first set. I do over 40,000 miles per year hear in south east Virginia. That said, they are on my BMW 325i, but my daughter drives a '96 850 turbo wagon and when her tires are gone, she'll be getting the Falkens. The few times we had snow down here, they did surprizingly well on the BMW which is nearly as bad as my old Alfa Milano was in snow and I grew up with lake effect snow so I do know how to drive in it. We (usually) get a lot of rain here and the Falkens are fantastic in the rain. The tires are also quiet and I have no problem taking sweeping turns at 85 MPH so there is reasonable performance from them. I got mine through hptires.net and their service was very good both times. I will do business with them again.

Good luck and for what it is worth, I am replacing struts and shocks in all four corners of the Volvo over the 7/4 "holiday." What daddy's do for daughters.

Look at tirerack.com (including written in opinions, survey). I have been using BF Goodrich "Traction T/A" H rated and am happy enough to be about to buy my 3rd set. Before that I had Toyo Proxes TPT H rated and was not happy with the very uncertain and squirmy handling.

I put a set of Falkens on my 850 a few months ago, and have been happy with them so far. They are about 52/ea at discount tire online, and free shipping.

The old set was Yokohama ES100s - a summer tire, but fine for AZ I guess. They have no ice sipes, just a V pattern with a center rib. I was very happy with them, but wanted a set of all-season tires to use longer before I put my winter tires on (when it really starts to snow).

I think there are a lot of good tires out there, Yokos are very good replacements. The Falkens are made in Japan too.

I think Sears sells the Falken tire as well.

Funny that people mention the falkens 850 1996

I was at tirerack.com and they have gotten some unfavorable reviews..specifically that they get less than 12k before wearing out. I am not sure how people are driving, but I do know that the 195/60/15 also fit on honda accords, subaru forrester, and the newer hyundai elantras and perhaps people with other makes of cars get wildy different results. There are some 850 drivers posting reviews as well...a few claim that the threading penetrates the sidewalls!

I might just bite the bullet and get the expensive Michelins..whatever tires get elsewhere in the country, you can cut it by half in AZ. These tires allegedly get 70k and are the quietest..but they are pricey.

Thanks for all the responses, I will let you know how it turns out.
