Hello Everyone,
Well it's that time of year again and my A/C is not working. I pulled the codes from the B1 slot and got 1-2-2 (outside temp sensor) and 4-1-4 (driver's side temp fan seized. I removed both cabin sensors and blew them out. Hooked them up again and turned on the key and they both work great!! Checked codes again from B1 slot and got 1-1-1 (no faults). Now what???? If I'm getting no codes, why isn't the A/C working? The clutch will not engage. I tried jumping it but that didn't work either. Also, I have the dreaded lights blinking on my climate control panel but I don't know what these mean. I have the type of climate control where there are two controls with degrees on them for the driver and the passenger.
If anyone can steer me in the right direction to try and get this A/C up and running, I will truly appreciate it!!!! Are there any relays or sensors I should be checking? I've searched so many posts but need more guided, detailed info on what to do. Lots of women know what y'all are talking about but I don't. With a little detail I can usually get the job done.
Thanks for any help you would give me!! Please be specific. I appreciate it!!!

I do not know about the electronic A/C, as my 850 has teh basic system. However, I had similar problems, teh compressor would not kick in, yet it appeared I had a full charge of refrigerant, based on static rpressures...enought ot run amyway.
The broomstick did not work, replacing the relay did not wither.
What did work is tapping the low pressure switch, which had become stuck. That worked for a while, but repreated failures forced me to spend a whaopping $25 or so on a new switch, and all has been well since.
Best of luck!

When the lights blink, you have new codes! Check B1 again. The outside temp sensor is infront of the driver, probably hanging down to the left of the radiator. I have seen them stuck into frame holes. It is black with 2 wires and the other end has 3 or 4 plastic prongs (which are to keep it in the proper hole) and a rounded black center prob.
I am being lazy so I may or may not look at my 1995 to see where I put the sensor :)
Try moving the fan switch close to the center and see if the clutch kicks in.
Klaus
EDIT: I found the temp sensor. The left side of the large lower opening in the front bumper. There is a small piece of metal that it clips into. I also realized that the license plate covers half of the air intake! Bummer.

Hi Klaus,
Thanks so much for your reply!
I tried moving the fan switch to the center but the clutch still didn't kick in. I know this problem is going to turn out to be something simple....just need to find the source. Are there any relays or sensors I should be checking? What else would cause the A/C not to run? I know the evaporator is okay because my mechanic checked that. He thinks the compressor is fine too. He's a great mechanic but only works on the weekends. I figured if I could troubleshoot this problem, he wouldn't have to waste all his time searching and we could get this A/C running. Let me know if there is anything else I can check out that could be a problem.
I found the outside temp sensor. I'm going to have this replaced because my digital temp on the dash reads the wrong temp sometimes. Can this stop the A/C from working? It's not always wrong but it does give wrong temp readouts.
Thanks, again, for your reply. I know by all the posts I've read on this forum that you know your stuff!!!!

Laurie,
If the outside temp is =< the inside temp, no ac. Try unpluging the sensor and cleaning the contact first. It may just be dirty!
As for the compressor, your car is old enough to qualify for the long stick test! Run the car with the AC switched on and the temps at 64. Then, very carefully, with a broom stick or like device, reach down and very LIGHTLY tap the front of the compressor. If the clutch engages, then the clutch needs to be adjusted. About a 2 hour operation for your mechanic. No additional parts needed.
Klaus
PS. I am NOT a mechanic, I just sleep at Holiday Inns and read this board :)

Hi Klaus,
Thanks for the reply and info!!!! I'll have my husband clean the outside temp sensor tomorrow but I'll definitely leave the "stick" treatment of the clutch to my mechanic. I am praying hard that this will do the trick! I'll have to wait until Saturday but this mechanic is worth it. He's very thorough and knowledgeable. He'll start at step 1 and go through everything until he finds the problem. Takes him a bit longer but he's worth it. Sure wish you lived next door and could stop over for a minute..... My A/C would have been working 2 weeks ago, huh?
One more question :) :). The lights to the A/C and recirc blink about 20 times after I start the car. I keep checking the codes in B1 then erasing them and starting the car again. I did this about 4 times and I keep getting a 1-2-4 and a 1-2-6 code. What are these? Also, is the ECC bad and how would I know?
Thanks, again, Klaus!!!!

I can understand your reluctance to stick a stick next to a moving belt :) It is a bit unnearving and dangerous to boot.
Your 2 codes are for the left and right cabin temp sensors. I thought you cleaned them? Did you pull them out? The codes are for an open circuit on both of them.
When I cleaned mine, I had to take them out and use a tooth pick to get all of the gunk out of the little fan blades. Blowing a little air on them won't work.
The ECC unit is fairly reliable.
Move the selector from auto to dash vents and the fan from auto to move-air-around, and see if the AC kicks in.

Hi Klaus,
On Sunday I removed both cabin air sensors completely and vacuumed all the dust out. I then connected them back up and turned the car on and they both spun around like crazy. I don't understand why I'm still getting the codes for them? I watched them spin like crazy before I put them back in.
As for moving the vents and air movement.....didn't work. I believe the problem is with the compressor. Does the compressor have a power relay? If it does, where is it located? Got to get this compressor going so we can get some refrigerant into it. If it's empty, we weren't able to fill it cause we tried. Without the compressor running, it won't take any. Let me know about the power relay for the compressor, if you don't mind.....
Thanks, Klaus!!!!!

The AC relay is behind the glove compartment, but it seldom fails.
Turn the fan speed to 0, then turn the key to posII and try resetting the 2 codes. When the fan is off, so is the ECU.
In the email I sent you, the PDF has a section on testing. Read it again.

Hi Klaus,
My mechanic wasn't able to come over this weekend for the A/C. His daughter was sick and his wife had to work. :( :(
I've been reading through the pdf you sent me....very interesting!! One question I have that it does not answer (at least I can't find it) is, "although the fan is working on the cabin temp sensor, could the sensor itself be gone or does the fan working indicate the sensor is okay?" I'm asking because the fans are working fine but I'm still getting the 1-2-4 and 1-2-6 code. Can you let me know the answer to this question. Maybe I'm assuming the sensor is okay just because the fan works.
Thanks, Klaus!!

When you cleaned the little fans, I hope you didn't damage the little sensor that sticks out like a flower pistal. The fan spinning just means that the fan is spinning. If you cannot clear the codes, then the sensor is not sending a signal to the ECC.
FYI, the memory for the ECC is in the ECC itself, not the car's ECU.
See how much you learned, you just past me up :) Oh, It is going to get nice and warm on the East coast in a few days.

Good Morning Klaus,
You're the best!! I'm always afraid to send a question directly to you because I don't want to be a pain in the neck but I also know you know EVERYTHING about these cars and I figure, "why not just go straight to the Volvo Master". I really hope you don't mind me contacting you directly????? I am reading my pdf and learning alot.
I know I didn't damage anything in the cabin sensors because I was extremely gentle and cautious. I think they were probably bad all along cause the code just won't go away. Think I'll order some from erievolvo.com. I've read lots of good stuff about them and they're half the cost of the dealer's.
Have a great day, Klaus!!!!!!!! I appreciate all the help you're giving me and know that soon this A/C will be fixed!!!!!!

Hi Klaus,
I've reset the B1 codes several times but they keep coming back. Maybe the cabin sensor fans stopped working once I put them back in?? Don't know why they would when they were working so well....
I'm sorry but I didn't receive an e-mail with a PDF. I haven't been on this board for a long time and my e-mail has changed. I didn't even think to change it here. It is now Godizluv1@verizon.net.
You have been so great and I can't thank you enough!! Really!! Nobody else answered my post at all so you're the only one out there. Once they see Ossipeegirl I think they all shy away knowing I'm a female. Seems like all the other posts have 3 or more responses. I'm sorry to be bothering you so much.
Thanks, again, for everything!! I truly do APPRECIATE it!!

I have been experiencing the same symptoms as Ossipeegirl. My '99 V70 's A/C just stopped working this week. One day fine, next day nothing. I cleaned the sensor, tried the brommstick, but can't get the compressor to go. I seem to hear some relay clicking on and off, but the clutch does not work. The A/C relay in the Main Fuse box is not the one that I hear clicking though.
I did not see an final result from Ossipee's problem. Did she find out what was wrong?

Well, my daughter's 850 just contracted your disease :) The right side cabin temp sensor just stopped sensing correctly. I get warm air coming out of the right side vents.
Where did you get the sensors? And how did you loosen the B pillar with out breaking the plastic? I haven't removed the temp sensor yet, obviously. And no codes from B-1 yet.
Thanks,
Klaus
PS. I tried to send this from my e-mailer, but it keeps changing the z to an s in verizon. Strange.
