Please help! Struts are absolutely not budging. 850

Hi,

I read the posts and looked up instructions for replacing the tailgate struts for my 1995 850 wagon. I bought the oem parts at fcp groton, removed the car panel on one side. Had some trouble removing the front end (toward the driver) of the strut using leverage with the body of a screw driver, but now absolutely cannot remove the back end of the strut. I spent about 3 hours last weekend trying various positions of the door, brute force, tools to wedge the socket off the ball, etc.

Knowing that this was posted as a beginner type projectl is doubly discouraging.

Any tips anyone? Please help!

Thanks!

It really should not take much force.

There may be a little retention spring/pin through the socket part of the strut that keeps the strut from coming off the ball during normal operation. Has it been removed? Hope this helps.

I recall that my struts were a bit of pain to remove too, very tight to get off.

I think I finally got the ball/socket separated by twisting the strut arm with adjustable pliers, but after I lubed the socket. I think I also put the hatch at less than full up, but can't be sure, its been a while.

You could try to use a hot air gun to heat up the strut a bit. A torch is not a good idea for this application.

I can't think up a magic way to get them apart, but the socket sure is never going to come off on its own!
