Looking for DIY re&re Headlight Assembly on 98 V70 V70-XC70 1998

Hi all,

The Volvo headlight glass must be thin stuff! I now am the recipient of two busted headlight lenses on my 98 V70. One has a hole big enough to fit my little finger.

I managed to snag a couple of good used headlight assemblys' recently. Before I tackle the job I had a look at what was available for DIY info on Brickboard, but to no avail.

Can somebody point out to me the URL for a DIY on removing and reinstalling both headlight assemblies for a V70 of my model's vintage (1998)?

Also, does anybody know if there are any plastic protectors I can add to the headlights to protect them from future damage? I'm willing to sacrifice the headlight wipers in order to not go through this again.

TIA for the replies,

Cheers,
Daryl S.

FYI, You can get good aftermarket lenses from IPD. They have glass for $75 and platic for $35.

BE VERY CAREFULL TO NOT TOUCH THE INSIDE REFLECTIVE COATING. IT WILL COME OFF EASILY.

    ANSWER Looking for DIY re&re Headlight Assembly on 98 V70 V70-XC70 1998

    Daryl:

Here's a reference to another forum which you might find interesting. I recently started this process myself but had to put it on hold, as one of the bolts would not unscrew - it seems that the fastener inside the headlight assembly is turning with the bolt. Happily it's not a must-do right at the moment, but I want to see it through, so I'm pursuing other means of holding the fastener in place while I'm torquing the bolt. I'll post when/if I find a satisfactory fix here, because I feel that the problem is due to this bolt being overtorqued during a previous r&r - pre-me, which could happen anytime, even during production. Certainly something to be aware of.
One other thing - for background I was looking at the availability of parts for this corner of the brick, and found quite an assortment of complete light assemblies AND lens repair kits on eBay - something to keep in mind for the future. If you run into my disassembly problem, I'd certainly appreciate a post with any fixes you come up with. Here's the URL:

Thanks for the warning about the bolts. I have a small quarter-inch drive impact gun that I will use (if I have the room) to loosen the bolts; that should greatly reduce the chance of the other side of the bolt turning.

If it does turn, no big deal - out comes the hammer & Sawzall. The replacement assemblies I bought are near-perfect and certainly better than what I have. So if I have to destroy the old assemblies "in situ" so be it.

      Thanks everyone for the replies.

      Regards,
      Daryl

Easy DIY. Remove the turn signal by releasing the plastic slide/clip and pull it forward and out of the way. The 10mm blots are fairly easy to reach, except one, and then the assembly comes right out.
I saw a plastic cover that glues on the glass, like window tinting, but I forgot where - sorry.

The 10 mm bolts that hold the assemblies in are fairly easy to find. I think one is obscured by each hood latch.
