Help
I recently purchaced a 97 850turbo at auction. The engine has been changed to a non turbo unit. I cannot locate the engine serial number, but the tag on the auto trans reads 50-42LE, 1208 890, 96 C W 81598. Any guesses what year this drivetrain might be?
Thanks

Well the AW5042LE is the model number for the trans and I am guessing but the 1208 890 is probably 1208890 and is the part number for the trans, I have no idea what the rest of the stuff is. The engine serial number is going to be on the ear of the block that sticks out just in front of the #1 exhaust port. If you lean over the timing cover and look down there with a flashlight you can see it, sometimes it is necessary to get a mirror out to see it. I believe that ear is also right at the top edge of where the water pump bolts into the block, kind of near where the coolant drain petcock is.

the engine serial number is very difficult to find much less read. Thanks for helping me locate it! Stamping the numbers out of a series of dots sure does not enhance its visibility. I had to clean it with a flat screw driver, then read it with a magnifying glass. The serial number is B52545138734. I hope someone can help me identify the motor from this.
      Thanks again

Thanks for the reply. Any idea how I can turn this newfound information into a model year of manufature? It turned out that the car had headlights from a 93, I 'm hoping that at least the trans is a 97.
