CHARCOAL CANISTER HISSING 850 1996

I heard a loud hissing under our 96 855T and traced it to the atmospheric vent on the charcoal cannister. Both hoses attached and in good shape. This is a very loud hiss, and if I covered the vent nipple w/ my finger, it caused the engine to begin a rough idle. Any idea what is malfunctioning?

    Very interesting...

Did you over fill the tank and get gasoline poured into the cannister? That is supposed to be a closed system without any vents to the outside. The charcoal is supposed to collect gas vapors and release them when the engine is running by drawing air from the tank to the intake manifold.
It sounds like your line from the tank to the cannister is full of fluid and when you cover up the "hole", the vacuum is pulling in raw gasoline and causing an overrich condition. If this is the case, you need to run the car on the open road with the vent hole taped shut for a while.
Or, wait for a better answer :)

    Klaus
