Strange starting problem: relay? 850 1994

Seems heat related as problems goes after cooling a short time.

Symptoms: can hear clicking of relays but starter will not kick in. Have replaced micro switch on transmission gear shift. PNP also replaced and not typical symptoms. Could this be relay related such as overheated relay that cools or ignition switch?

Appreciate input and thanks,

dick

The problem apparently was the ignition switch electrical portion. Key also works more easily, so believe this was it.

It's possible. I would also check the battery connections and the ground for tightness, corrosion. That is a cheap check, so it's worth trying. Starting is the biggest demand for a battery system, so if there's a bit of an issue, it could show up there.

I assume the battery is new/charged too.

There are no CEL codes, also, right?

I second this, especially in warmer weather when resistances increase. Sometimes the outside of batt cables looks ok but there is damage inside/underneath.

Will double check that battery. It is essentially new, but cable connections do build resistance. Had that problem with (get this) a '53 chevy. Replaced cables and never another problem.

No codes either, so maybe simple??? Thanks, and will report back.
