Winter tires in summer? 850

A couple of questions:

How important is it to change winter tires to summer or all seasons when the weather gets warm? Is it actually dangerous to drive on the winter tires when it's warm?

I have my winter tires on ugly old steely wheelies. I have my all season tires on the alloy wheels that came with my 850. Do I really need to have those wheels balanced when they are put back on my car?

Thanks in advance,

Linda

What shape are your snow tires in? Are they still suitable for winter, or do you plan on replacing them?

You might find a good tire shop and ask them. I have been dealing with the same tire shop since 1964, when they retreaded the tires for my first car, a 1960 SAAB. They did the job right there at the shop!

Now the son runs the business, his two sons work in the office and grandpa hangs around a couple of days each week. They treat me quite well and are always available to answer questions.

I plan on running one set of snows next summer after their tread is under 50% of new. They told me that today's snows can be run all summer if need be, but the post about high wear is certainly correct.

Thanks for quick reply. I love your suggestion of phoning a reputable tire place. I'll do that.

Thanks for the reply.

They are in pretty good shape, but they are five years old and I've read they should be changed after five years in any case.

The reason I asked about the balancing, is that I got charged for balancing the last time. I was just wondering if that was reasonable. I thought one of the advantages of having two sets of wheels, was the savings on balancing.

1.) The winter compound will wear a lot faster at high temperatures. So it's probably not a great idea. I do keep a winter tire on a steel rim in the trunk of one of our cars as a spare in the summer, and keep a full-size all season on an alloy in the trunk in the winter. My thought is it's better than one of those donut spares if I have a flat 200 miles from home. 200 miles probably doesn't matter much in terms of excess wear, but 20,000 probably would.

2.) If the all season wheels and tires were balanced when they came off the car, why would they become unbalanced just sitting in your garage?
