V70 Stalling after a few seconds V70-XC70 1999

1999 V70 with 175,000. Recently had ETM software upgrade performed. Two weeks after car stalled while driving. Codes indicate Cam. pos. sensor and possible Cam. Pos. Solenoid. Replaced both. Car started fine - runs for 3 or 4 minutes then dies. Subsequent start attempts - car fires and runs 5 seconds and dies. What could it be ?!?!??

Hello Mike,

I've had similar difficulty as the car starts then dies.

This might be it:

Could be the immobilizer, there is a microchip inside the plastic part of the key. An antenna coil around the ignition lock communicates with the microchip and checks the ID-code... If the ID is not recognized, the engine shuts down..
One of our keys failed and gave exactly this symptom, try if another works better. There is also a known problem with the connector to the antenna coil.

As noted you might use a different key, or try returning key to pos 0, then 2, then back to 0 then try to start. Turn the key over and give that a try.

Also do a search: start, dies, V70. You might pick up something else.

Good Luck,

Marty

Hello Marty,
Turned out to be the Fuel pump relay.
Thanks,
Mike

Lots of possibilities. The easiest to check is the fuel pump relay. When you turn the key you should hear the fuel pump whirr for about 1 second. Once you engage the starter, you should be able to hear the FPR click (if your head is above the fuse box). Lift the fuses out of the way and tap on relay #103. It should make lots of little sounds when starting.
If it doesn't run after starting, you could push on the schrader valve (rag in hand) to see if there is still fuel pressure.

Hi Klaus,
I do get the initial sound at the turn of the key. I will check the relay and the fuel rail for pressure. Also I was thinking that my fuel filter may be clogged causing the fuel pump to work harder - thus triggering the relay ?

I will check this and let you know. Thanks again for the advice.
Regards,
Mike

You are supposed to replace the fuel filter at about 90K miles, and you are right. The pump will work harder if the filter is clogged. You are wrong about the function of the relay. The relay's function is to turn the pump on and off according to the computer. It has nothing to do with how hard the pump is working.
I also like the immobilizer ring on the keyed portion of the ignition. When it fails, same symptoms.
