intermittent starting problems V70-XC70 1998

Hello,

I have a 98XC with 130k --I have had sporadic problems with starting. If I go for three errands in the morning- on the fourth the car won't start-the radio and windows work no ignition just a noise( doink ) coming from the doors. The car has a battery less than a year old. I have tried the PNP switch test - moving the shifter back and forth, have tried starting it in neutral. The only thing that "works" is when I leave it overnight it starts right up. I took it to the dealer and they said that they could not replicate the "no start" so they coud not figure it out. Anybody with some ideas? I really appreciate your help.Thanks.

Check for worn ignition switch - look at volvospeed.com/Bay13 or wiggle key in switch.
Check for damaged or corroded battery cables / connections. Corrosion may not be evident on surface so look carefully. If cables have too much resistance this may worsen with use or heat - could contribute to later starts being harder.
I think if the PNP is bad the starting system will not operate at all - no clunk or noise. Your test seems to have eliminated that anyway.

If you have a voltmeter check voltage at battery while trying to start. It should go down to 9-10 volts. If not dropping the starter is not drawing current - suspect bad connections as above. If it drops but the starter does not run, suspect a defective starter (drawing current but not doing any work).
