Discovered unattached vacuum line...where does it go? 850 1997

This weekend I pulled the ABS controller from my new-to-me 1997 850 T5 to send it off to Victor Rocha for repair. While I was in there I discovered a vacuum hose that wasn't attached to anything and I couldn't figure out where it should go.

There are two hard plastic hoses that come around the driver's side of the engine from somewhere in the front - a larger one and a smaller one, tied together in a foam sleeve. The larger one goes into the hose between the air filter housing and the turbo, close to the turbo, but the smaller one (which has a rubber elbow on the end) is not attached to anything. I couldn't see any nipples that were missing a vacuum line, but I can't imagine that this line isn't used either. Help!

    Hello Rod,

The elbow that you found should connect to the same nipple as the larger hose. In the side of the nipple (right near the base of the larger hose) there should be a smaller nipple for it to connect to (on the firewall side). This hose supplies vacuum to the crankcase ventilation system. If left disconnected, you'll likely have increased oil leakage and a fuel trim code (leading to a check engine light). Anyway, let me know if you need anything else. I'm glad to help.

Thanks Joe. I saw the nipple you are referring to, but it was capped off - I wonder why somebody would have done that?

I will reconnect and see what happens (no oil leaks and no check engine codes now).

      Thanks again

        Hello again,

Make sure that there are no other nipples back there. I replaced the hose on my wife's 850 and had to cap off a few extra holes (Volvo made a one-for-all hose as a new part and it is therefore necessary to cap off the unused ports). This is true of the replacement parts, but the original fresh air hose should have no extra holes. Anyway, the one that I had to cap on her car is beside the PCV nipple, not part of it. The hole that you need is actually part of the PCV nipple also (can be confusing I guess). If it's dosconnected, you won't have a vacuum source for the PCV system, as that hose is where the system receives it's vacuum. As I said before, any more questions let me know.
