catalytic converter/o2 sensors and the air pump quandry? V70-XC70 1999

My check engine light has been coming on/off intermitently. My mechanic get codes indicating a front o2 sensor. The rear has been repklaced twice. A $100 scan at the dealership indicates a front o2 and possibly a MAF problem. My mechanic whom I trust thinks it is actually the catalytic converter. On another possibly related side note, when the temps got real low this winter, I got this load almost gurgling sound from the engine on the passanger side when I would first be driving. Once I had been driving for about 5-10 minutes it would eventually stop. It did not occur when the car was stopped with engine idling. Could there be some sort of problem with the air pump system thereby creating a domino effect and damaging the o2 sensors as well as the catalytic converterr? Incidentally, the rough runs great but a little rougher than our other 99' XC.

catalytic converter/o2 sensors and the air pump quandry? V70-XC70 1999

Apparantly, I have good fortune in that I have 2 independant Volvo mechanics within five miles of me. Unfortunately, both are saying that the CAT is bad. One says it is unusual and the other says it is not for a 99' with 100k mi. I am also getting the code ECM 510f which I guess is the speed signal. What does this have to do with the CAT? The other codes are ECM 280A and ECM 4801. I didn't get to ask if the vaccuum elbows and lines were checked for cracks of if he cleaned the electrical connection to the MAF which I doubt he did because I think he would have charged me for the labor (time taken to check it out). Can I make an appointment to have them checked specifically before I go ahead with replacing the CAT? Or am I to assume they would have done this already which would lead them to suspect the CAT? If not so, what would I be looking at labor wise to have this checked out and is this a resonable request to make? I appreciate the help. Thanks

    Meg,
The cold start air pump is on the driver's side, just forward and below the battery. So that's not it. The "gurgle" could be an air buble in the antifreeze lines, so check the level of antifreeze in the overflow bottle.

I would unplug the electrical connection for the MAF and clean it thoroughly with a tooth brush and electrical cleaner. The MAF looks like it is connected to the air filter box right where the air hose turns and goes toward the firewall.
The majority of O2 errors are generated by vacuum leaks. CATs seldom fail, unless you go to Mexico and fill up on leaded gasoline. Have you mechanic check all of the vacuum elbows and the lines for age cracks.

Cat's don't die thay are murdered. So while Klaus is correct if you have bad O2 sensors your car will run rich and destroy the cat. But it is unikely that has happened.

I think you need a better mechanic who will actually diagnose the problem, not replace stuff at random or guess.

Is your car at a Volvo specialist?

Yes, my car is with a Volvo specialist. I'm not sure what codes he is getting, I know atleast one (ecm-280A) was picked up by the scan at the dealership. They suggested starting with the front o2. I have already replaced the rear 2x. I don't know what codes my mechanic is getting which is leading him to believe it is the Cat. Can I ask him if he checked all the vacuum hoses like Klaus suggests? What other componets interact with the Cat that could be leading it to its untimely death? How should I proceed here?

The car has to run rich to kill the cat. Lead also ruins them, but I doubt you are getting leaded gas.

I'm not sure why the mechanic isn't testing O2 sensors before replacing them. They are pretty easy to check.

Don't be afraid to ask your mechanic why he is headed in a certain direction, get his reasoning and if it sounds lame post the info here for a second opinion.

How do you test an oxygen sensor?
