Coolant smell S70 1998

I'm getting an odor in the cabin when running the heater that my mechanic-friend says smells like coolant. Any suggestions what could be wrong?

John,

I just went through this. It's probably your heater core. I just replaced mine on Monday. I got a Behr core from FCP Groton and had the job completed in less than 2 hours. In my case, I had to pull the carpet back to see that it was leaking. The carpet has a backing on it that doesn't let the coolant seep through, at least mine did.

I check with a few local dealerships and was quoted about $700 parts/labor, I did it for less than $150.

Hope this helps.

Before taking the side panels off of the center console, check the carpet and pad next to the console for antifreeze leak. Also check the expansion tank level, you may be down a tad.
For a picture discussion on how to replace the heater core, if that is the problem: http://www.volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?showtopic=9717

Remember, if the pad under the carpet is wet, it takes forever to dry. At least a week with the car parked in the sun :(
