'01 V70 Cargo Cover won't retract fully V70-XC70 2001

My cargo cover will not retract much. There does not appear to be any obvious broken parts, no rattles, etc. It will retract an inch or two when the end caps are compressed. Any thoughts on how to restore its "spring"?

Turns out I answered my own question. For the benefit of anyone else who runs into this, this is what I did. You can whack either endcap off with a light hammer blow. One side contains a ratcheting mechanism and the torsion spring. The other side just contains a ratcheting mechanism. You roll the cover material up and preload the spring - takes a few attempts to get the tension right and then push that cap back on.
