Problem with left halft shaft removal 850 1994

Greetings. I'm in the middle of removing the left half shaft from my 850. I read through many ofthe previous postings and unlike others I had little problem removing the axle nut or freeing the axle from the wheel. I then used a crowbar and was able to free the inner end of the axle from the trans. My pleasure with how easily the job seemed to be proceeding came a crashing halt at this point, as the axle only came about 3 cm out of the trans. before catching and refusing to come further. I have tried prying on it further with a block of wood between the prybar and the trans., but without luck. Any ideas or suggestions?

Stuff it back into the trans and try again. It sounds like you have it crocked in one direction or the other and if you pop it back in and pop it back out as fast and hard as you can it will probably give you what you want. Do becareful to not damage the case of the trans while prying on stuff under there.

Mark

Thanks, Mark. Indeed with a little less fatigue and frustation, I was able to push it back in a bit and pull it out. The new one installed just fine. No apparent problems with the trans housing, as I was pretty careful with the prying.

Cheers, Chris.

If I am throwing the old one away, I just yank the whole axle with two hands. No prying no mess. Unless of course the inner u joint separates.

As you say, I pretty much just yanked it out of there. The first couple of centimeters required a bit more leverage than I could get while yanking on it, so I did have to pry on it a bit. I was just surprised when it didn't easily yank the rest of the way out after that. I had just gotten it bound in there somehow, and a little pushing and pulling freed it right up. I have to disagree with the "no mess" part of the response, however. I feel like I may never get that black grease that had come out of the CV boot off my hands!

Dude, buy some rubber/latex gloves about $15.00 for 300 at Costco. I work on cars all day. My wife always makes fun of me. She wants to know who I'm playing doctor with. By the way any one need a gallon of GoJo.
