98 volvo check engine light OBD II codes 232, 172 S70

My check engine light comes on at random times, 50 - 1000 miles.
My ACTRON code reader shows the error code to be 172, local volvo dealer told me that the error code was 232.
Need help in finding the problem.

Let me see, you have an front O2 sensor detecting too much unburned gas at idle conditions. You could have a need for new spark plugs, a leak in the vacuum system, a dying fuel pressure regulator, an O2 sensor going bad, a dirty throttle body, a need for a new air filter, and the list goes on.
