98 V70, DRIVER DOOR 'BRAKE' tips??? V70-XC70

Hi guys,

My driver door, after 9 years of service, and thousands of times opening and closing has decided to swing freely.

The bottom line is the "Door Brake" = "Door Check" = "Door Strap" = "Middle Hinge" (Yes, there are many names for this thing).

It is mentioned here:
http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/hinge.php

I want to replace the Door Brake. BUT the QUESTION is:
DO I need to remove the INNER door panel? From the picture, it looks like I can get away without removing the INNER door panel but I might be wrong?
Any opinions?

    98 V70, DRIVER DOOR 'BRAKE' tips??? V70-XC70

    Greetings, cn:
I acquired my own 98 V70 about this time last year, and within a few months noticed that the driver's door brace had lost its tension. I had it replaced (by my dealer) and soon after found that the high tension of the new brace was causing the spot welds fastening the doorframe attachment bracket to break away (this area had already been re-welded to no avail). This drew me to the many articles written about the repair techniques devoted to correcting the fault. If I had it to do over, I would have gone with the loose door stay and been careful when opening the door, rather than be in the situation of looking at more and more irritating symptoms in that area. However, that being said: to answer your immediate question, my experience indicates that the door liner has to come off. The door brace locates to the front edge of the door from the inside, and I found that there wasn't room to remove it through the opening which the brace passes through. My repair process is ongoing, but for the moment the door brace is riding loose in the door - so far it hasn't caused a problem or any extra rattles, but I need to get back to it - as soon as the Fraser Valley rain abates somewhat. If you'd like more info on my work to date in this area, I'd be happy to pass along some pointers gleaned from other sources, as well as pix I've taken allong the way. You can contact me direct via gratwerk@shaw.ca if you choose.
    Regards, Garth.

      FIXED IT!!!!! V70-XC70

      Dear gus_boy,

Thanks for the message, I fixed it.

Actually for 98 V70, door panel needs to come off (I checked with tech at dealer). Part was $50 at dealer (same price on internet).

Just did it, it took 30 minutes!

      1. Get part from dealer (R is different than L side)

      2. Review this post for loose "door stop"
      http://volvospeed.com/Repair/hinge.php
Basically Torx 40 and 100mm nuts.

      3. Remove the inner door panel as per:
      http://volvospeed.com/Repair/70_door.php

The NEW DOOR STOP needs to be turned 90 degree to slide through.
Also note the orientation of the rubber boot to make sure you put it back the same way.
If in doubt, check the other side for orientation.

Again 30 minutes and you are done.

PS: The reason the door attachment becomes detached is because people are too rough on the door when exiting the car. They swing the door wide open, therefore creating stress on the door frame, tearing off the metal, thus the need for re-welding.

      Thanks all.

      cn
