ADVICE ON 2002 S80 S80 2002

I am new to this board only because I am seriously considering a great deal on a 2002 s80. It was leased until august of 05 when it was purchased by my dad who has taken excellent care of it. He has only needed to do regular maintenance for the past year and a half. It has 67k miles and drives like a dream. My husband has done research on the web and has not found any positive feedback on s80's. I'm curious these problems are year specific and not model specific. Any insight on a 2002 S80?

Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom,
Sara

ADVICE ON 2002 S80 S80 2002

I have a 2002 S80 with no problems at all. I bought it used, 2nd owner, with 29,000 miles and it is now at 67,000. I change the oil and make sure if it needs something it gets it - but the only thing it has needed is tires. Mine is the 2.9. I wish you well with your decision, I certainly love mine and hope it lasts a very long time.

ADVICE ON 2002 S80 S80 2002

Hi Sara,

I have a 2002 S80 going on 80 Kmi. The first 3 years it was driven lightly around town, since then I drive it 500 mile a week. Have always changed the oil & filter every 10 weeks. Have had end links replaced (under warranty) and a few other minor things. If it is in good shape, runs well, and has not shown itself to be problematic, you may have a winner. I recommend independent service providers as the dealers are very expensive and their work (from my experience, one dealer) is questionable.

I have a 2002 S80 2.9 model purchased new and it has 42k miles on it. Excellent car. Only service to date was a brake light bulb failure. The placement of the manual door lock switch directly under the inside door open lever does fits with the door lock computer. Thus giving the appearence of troubles with locking and unlocking the doors. Volvo has moved the door opener handle forward now away form the switch so a person cannot open the door and activate the DLS at the same time, throwing the computer off its assigned sequence. I have not heard of anyone who had nothing but prase for 2002 built volvos. Good luck

The '99-01 S80 are on the Consumer Reports "Used Cars to Avoid" list but NOT the '02.

The only year S80 Consumer Reports actually recommends as a used car is the '04.

Does it still have any warranty left? ie. was it a Volvo "Certified-Pre-Owned" (CPO) car? IF it has a 100k warranty and the price is right....

It will be safe and the seats are great. But if it doesn't have any warranty I'd probably decline unless it was almost free. S80 tends to be a bargain as a used car because it is awfully complex and expensive to fix.

A 2002 S80 is certainly a better car than a 1999 S80, but that's in part because a 1999 S80 was one of the worst cars ever made by Volvo or anyone else for that matter. But try a search, in the right hand column above, lots of threads on S80 problems. There's lot of great deals on S80s - for a reason.
