This issue has developed recently on my 95 850 also. The rear lock was working intermittently then not at all. Sometimes it got out of synch where the key would not lock/unlock it. My dealer too says the only thing is to replace the entire lock assembly at $180. On inspecting the setup it looks to me like the connections to the little motor may be making poor contact some or all of the time. I'm still investigating.

If the dealer is clueless, don't let him touch the car. It's just going to cost you money and not solve the problem.
Are you using the remote to unlock the whole car, or just the tailgate? Try unlocking with the key. If that works, then it is in the switch to unlock the doors. Double check the fuses. But it may be just a wire going bad from the door to the body of the car.

I am using the remote and pressing twice on button that unlocks the doors. The trunk button when pressed Does not appear to activate anything or at least hat is heard. The tailgate does not have a key to open from out side of car that I am aware of?
Thanks for help

My 1998 has a covered, hard to see black flap, key hole just to the right side of the license plate. If the new models do not have a key hole, then you will have to open the liftgate from the inside and remove the panel. With the wires exposed, you can then test them for continuity. Those motors are fairly indestructable.

rear lock problem on tailgate V70-XC70 1999

There are some things that are super natural. Car's and their problems are definitely up there.

Last Saturday I decided to locate an annoying rattle in the rear of the car, been there since the dealer had their collective butts in there. Simple fix, all it took was me riding in the rear of the wagon with no seat belt while my wife (Mrs. Speed Racer) drove, talk about a BB in a boxcar. Turns out they reinstalled the cargo net housing incorrectly. Simple fix right, wrong. Some how the hatch ajar light comes on? Well here I go, check this, check that, lock/unlock things, read manual check all fuses. Did everything but take the tyres off.

Now the alarm doesn't work.

Is this because I read this thread, only the Magician's Apprentice knows for sure.

But really, according to the description of fuse ganging my EM flashers etc shouldn't work if the alarm fuse is bad. The hatch open light could be for any door?

Any input would be a god send.

The alarm doesn't work because a door is open. Catch-22. Turn on the car and open the rear hatch. With a screwdriver, close the latch to the second click. Then see if the warning light goes out, it should. There is a micro switch in the latch on every door.
You can check the doors by flipping back the black lever just beneath the latch on each door. Be sure to lift the door handle before trying to close the door again!

Let me go over what I did step by step;
1) Car on, hatch light on, stop car open/close hatch.
2) Light still on, open/close all doors.
3) Light still on, turn car off re-start, light still on.
4) Turn car off, get out shut door and set alarm, check all doors all locked.
5) Unlock car w/remote, start car, light still on.
6) Turn car off, lock/unlock hatch with key, start car light still on.

During all of this I'm checking the manual, fuses. Neighbors cat checking me out.

Give up and lock car w/remote, that's when I notice that the lights don't flash and the little red blinker on the dash isn't blinking. Radio blinker still blinks.

Also worth noting, I use to be able to lock the car from inside, no longer, now the drivers door has to open and close before the doors can be locked with the remote.

I'm taking this that the doors are locking as a feature and not as part of the alarm?

Investigated some more last night. Turns out that there is a fuse in this box that is in slot # 25, according to the manual this slot should be empty, it has a 10amp fuse with a red lead coming off the line side that disappears under the main fuse housing. This fuse is not your standard one hump design but rather a "Z". I've seen this fuse design before but never with a wire off it. The only thing I can figure, until further investigation this weekend, is that the old Verizon phone system is somehow wired in with the alarm.

Well here's one for the books. Went back into the rear of the wagon to re-adjust the passenger cargo net. Got it nice and snug and closed the rear hatch and set the alarm. Holy smokes the lights flashed and the red dash LED started blinking. Got in and started the car, rear hatch trouble light out now.

Went back to the cargo area and looked under the carpet section next to the rear fold down seat, couldn't see any wires but will check this week.

Will wonders never cease.
