850 turbo tranny troubles 850 1994

Hey to all you FWD fellas out there....

I've got a '94 855 turbo and my tranny is shifting very early and is telling me that I have no voltage to my mode selector switch. Also... my power mirrors aren't functioning nor are the lights on the gear selector or the lights for the heated seat switches. My question then is this... Is there a shared hot or ground wire for that entire lot? I've already checked the fuses and they are fine. One more issue is that when I hold it in L range it will go like hell in first but just smack the rev limiter and not shift into second unless I put it up into 3'rd, but then it hits second for like a second and then goes directly into 3rd! I was reading the diagnosis proceedures in the Volvo service manual that I downloaded and it says something about checking to be sure that it will shift into second when the selector is in low, but it doesn't say anything about what it means if it doesn't! HELP!

Yes, there is a common ground. You will have to remove the console to get to it, and I believe it is under the ashtray area - on the tunnel. It is a good time to check for dirt and replace the gear indicator bulb. You may just have a loose electrical plug, so, unplug and clean all of the connectors.
Recheck the fuse, or replace it with a new one. It may have corroded inside the fuse holder. I have had to slightly bend the contacts of the fuse to make them tight.

As for the auto tranny, when in Low, it will shift from 2nd to 1st at 25mph. It will not up shift back to 2nd. 1997 and 1998 will not engage 1st until a complete stop is made, which I really like when the speed limit is 25mph.
Please do not hurt your car by driving at the limit in 1st gear. It is too hard on the engine. If you want, start in 3 and when you are over 25mph shift to Low (2nd), but beware of the downshift at 25mph.

It is also time to flush the tranny, if you haven't done so already.
