XC70 Front End Rattling V70-XC70 2003

My 2003 XC70 makes a noticeable rattling noise from the front end whenever a bump or dip is encountered. What could be the source - sway bar links, shocks, etc? This vehicle has 60,900 miles. Sorry if I overlooked a similar posting in the archive.

Yes. Sway bars, ball joints, steering arms are popular things to break under there. Just have a good mechanic or dealer tell you what you need. Here in Minnesota, a huge pothole will break said items and give you a "clunk" like you describe. Our XC has needed new ball joints and tie rods. It's common damage.

What would I look for underneath to verify for myself before taking it to the mechanic?

I took a 2001 XC to the dealer and they said the problem was struts and to be sure to replace the 'strut tops' as well.

Greetings! Metallic clanking sound in right front over potholes - 3 mechanics later... missing SHIM. Hope this helps. Oh, my volvo is a S60, 2004.
