I have had similar symptoms with my (actually, my wife's) 850. The car stalled on her when she was traveling home from the store one night. I drove the car for the next several days and experienced the same problem. I would be driving along, and the car would just die - all of the dash lights would come on as well.
I was able to restart the car while coasting a couple of times. One time I just had to pull over to the shoulder. After several minutes, I was able to restart and drive the car home.
On a couple of other occasions, I couldn't start the car on a slope. I would roll the car to level ground and she would start. I also noticed that after the car first stalled on my wife, the car was down to 2 on the fuel gauge.
Here is what I have done so far:
1. Replaced fuel filter - located on frame in front of passenger's side rear wheel. Read procedure on the Internet, Volvospeed website, Bay 13. Just Google Bay 13, it will get you there.
2. Filled car with high octane fuel, drove some more, stalled some more.
3. Pulled the fuel relay, removed the cover and inspected; the relay is pristine. I left the cover off of the relay and observed it's correct function when turning the key to the II position. BTW, I could hear a pump (fuel?)running in the engine bay in sync with the relay cycle. What pump is that (air?). Again, great pictures on Bay 13 for locating the relay. Still stalling.
4. Researched other possible causes here on Brickboard and Bay 13. I checked the integrity of the electrical connection between the wiring harness and the MAF; sure enough, there was oxidation on the terminals. I cleaned with contact cleaner, a wire brush, connected and disconnected about 20 times, coated with dielectric grease, and tied the harness to the MAF body with a wire tie, per picture in Bay 13.
So Far, So Good! That has been 4 days ago, no problems whatsoever.
If the car stalls again, I am researching the in-tank fuel pump. The pump is suspect because of the trouble I had starting on an incline and because of the low tank levels (the pickup tube may have issues). However, the car has also stalled when level and full, so the evidence isn't conclusive enough for me to start buying parts.
I would like to know how to test my fuel system pressure; comments and advice are most welcome. Where can I get a decent, cheap fuel pressure tester?
Finally, I also own a 1980 245 DL. It would cut out around 2200 rpm, jerking and bucking like a runaway bronc. After eliminating the transmission, OD, cleaning up the intake/throttle body, etc., I pulled the in-tank fuel pump. It had a clogged, deteriorated sock filter on the pickup tube, as well as a 4" long rubber fuel line that was also in sad shape. I replaced those two parts, resealed and installed, and replaced a couple of other bad fuel lines running from the top of the pump to a connector near the frame. She accelerates just fine, now - smooth as butter!
Does the 850 fuel pump have a similar filter and 4" fuel line?
I know that this is a long response, and I have also asked a couple of questions myself. Hopefully, we can both get our cars back to normal soon with the input and experience of other brickboarders!
