ABS and TRACS lights coming on together V70-XC70

Has anyone had the problem of the ABS and traction control lights coming on at the same time. This seems to be happening on my 2000 V70XC every once in a while. At first I thought it meant that I needed new brakes but the local tire shop says no. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,

RGW

ABS and TRACS lights coming on together V70-XC70 2000

I had a similar problem with my 2000 v70 SE where both lights would remain on after I started my car. For me, it turned out that the battery needed to be replaced -- something about the drop in current when the car starts was enough to take both ABS and TRACS off-line. It was also causing my car to fail emissions inspection.

Is your problem similar, or does it occur spontaneously while you're driving?

Mine happens while I'm driving. Once it happens, it stays on till I turn the engine on and off a few times. Then it goes away.

Your brakes are fine. The ABS controller is not. http://home.earthlink.net/~vicrocha/

will fix it for around $150, the dealer wants much, much more.

Just to add to Klaus's accurate reply, the TRACS (traction control system) uses the ABS system's wheel sensors to detect if any the tires are spinning. If the ABS isn't working properly, the TRACS won't either.

Just to add to Klaus'and Albert's accurate replies:

The next time your ABS and TRACS lights are illuminated, try one or both of these tests:
Try to use your cruise control. If it has worked properly before, but doesn't work now, that is a sign that your ABS controller is defective.
-or-
Find a dry safe place, apply your brakes and try to lock up your wheels. If your wheels lock, your ABS controller is defective.

Now you have a tough choice: Do you drop $600+ at your dealership for an OEM ABS controller ... or do you contact Victor Rocha and get a better controller for $150? Completely up to you.
