Axle Stuck in Hub 850 1994

Hello All,

I've gotten stuck attemping to drive out my driver's side axle from the hub. I easily got the big nut off the axle using my air tools but tried, and failed, to remove the axle using first a hard plastic hammer, then a brass headed hammer (soft head, per the Haynes manual). I have a front axle remover tool but did not crank down real hard on it until I posted a few questions:

1) Do I need to remove the lower (2) control arm bolts before I pound out or press out the axle? Is there enough play in the axle to break it loose and press it into the hub 1/2" or so?

2) How hard to I beat that axle? Should I put the nut on and hit the end of the nut (load goes through threads) or just beat the axle? Can I use a short handled steel sledge? Am I going to damage the axle or trans beating this thing? It seems that once I break it loose with the hammer, then I should finish the job with the puller.

3) If I don't use the hammer, how hard can I crank on the puller? Then again, how do I keep the axle from spinning when I tighten the puller? I can't seem to get full load on the puller 'cause the whole axle spins. Can I safely use my big air wrench?

4) Will heat help?

I live in the upstate of South Carolina and my underbody has virtually no rust anywhere. I can't believe it's rusted in place. If the expoxy is what's holding it in place, then heat might help. If it's a press fit, then heat might not work.

    Axle Stuck in Hub 850 1994

    Do not just "hit the axle". Not a good approach. One reason is you may need it, as I did when I reached a problem later down the line. The best way is to get a BMF hammer, thread the nut on leaving 1/16-1/8" gap, and hit it square with the BMF hammer. Once it breaks loose a bit, back off the threads a 1/16-1/8" and repeat. It should only take a few hit and back the nut off cycles to get it to break loose. Mine bound up almost all the way out though - thread sealer put on by Volvo ): Good luck.

    Ok, job is done, and here is how I did it.

    For a period of one week I sprayed Liquid Wrench on the axle sticking out of the hub. I put the big nut I originally took off back on the axle and let the side of the nut stick out ~ 1/8". Then I hit the side of the nut a few times with "average blows" from a 5 lb steel hammer... similar to a sledge but smaller and with a shorter handle. Then I'd spray a little more Liquid Wrench and let it sit another day. Then another few blow, and more oil. After the 3rd day, the hit felt "soft" and I could see that I moved the axle it a little bit. Then I removed the lower A-arm bolts to the frame and used my axle pressing tool to drive the axle all the way through the hub. Presto! Done.

    Axle Stuck in Hub 850 1994

    I followed the instructions on Bay 13 to remove my Wheel bearings. The axle poped out of S-70 fairly easily. I put the nut on and left it sticking out about 1/8" beyound the end of the axle and tapped it lightly with a metal sledge hammer. You may want to try WD-40 or one of the other lubricants to loosen any rust. The instructions I used suggested something like locktite rather than an epoxy. I imagine that using epoxy would make removal very difficult.
