Electrical System Question 850 1997

My daughter has my 1997 850 away at college and developed a strange problem with the car:

About 2-weeks ago, she called me and advised that while returning from work she had to use her high beam headlights. When she put them on, the car stalled. It immediately re-started and no other problems occurred. Then this week, she called me and told me that the battery was dead. The battery is about a year old.

I jump-started the car and tried to bring it back from her college (60-miles), but I could not keep the car running.

Can anyone diagnose this? Alternator, voltage regulator, short??????

I'll be driving back up there tomorrow to install a new battery and driving the car back home to be fixed!

Thanks for any input,

Don

    Electrical System Question 850 1997

Probable alternator problem. The brushes may have died or the wiring to them failed. The only way to find out is to check the voltage output. The voltage regulator going would have fried all of the electricals, including boiling the battery into oblivion.
When you drive home, make sure all of the lights are off including the DRLs. No radio, fan, etc. And be sparse with the brakes and turn signals. No stopping for lunch! Lets hope you make it home.
