my 2002 s60 2.0T auto tranny with 40000 km stalled (with engine running) in the middle of the road refusing to shift into gear. i turned engine off, turned it on again, and was able to drive a few meters before it went out of gear again. using inertia and repeated turn on, turn off engine, i was able to bring the car home. it wont even go into reverse. anybody have any idea what's going on? please dont scare me, i scare easy!

I am afraid rule 308 is correct. Have you check the transmission fluid level and color? Is the check engine light on? At only 40,000Km the car is still brand new.
I do not know which country your are in - PH ? - but hopefully a dealer can do a proper diagnosis.

thanks klausc! check engine light is not on and no message is shown in the message box on the left. howd you guess i was in the phil? you're good! i think because of my location (stop and go traffic) my 40thousand km is probably worth 80thousand if wear and tear on the tranny is what you're considering.

Tow it to your local Volvo dealer and if it isn't still under warranty then grind them for a free replacement transmission under good will warranty. Aside from that it sounds like your trans is toast and you need a new one.
