Hose in back of engine 850 1994

Perhaps a stupid question! - I looked under the hood the other day and found the large diameter ribbed silver hose (looks a little like a slinky) had come off. It attaches to the back of the engine about midway down on the firewall side (above the exhaust). I re-attached it the best I could, but what does this do? Is it part of the air intake system? Plus, I don't know how longed it's been detached so what is the impact, if any, of it being disconnected for who knows how long? The CEL has not come on - I'll check codes and see if any have been sent and report back.

Thanks for any insights!

Hose in back of engine 850 1994

This is just a source for heated intake air for better initial running in cold weather. If you local temps don't drop too low you're probably not even going to use it very much. You may need a large hose clamp to keep it in place. It just gets worn out after a while.

I don't have an 850 motor to look at anymore, but as I recall
that hose goes from above the exhaust to the back of the
airbox - this would be a non-turbo car.
The purpose is to warm-up the intake air in colder weather.
Since the computer adjusts the air/fuel mixture and uses the
temperature to determine the mixture, I don't think you
would notice any difference in engine performance with
or without the hose. You may see a small change in
fuel economy/emissions with the hose detached.
