How hard it is to replace a fuel injector ? 850 1997

Hi guys,

How hard it is to replace a fuel injector in a 97 N/A ?

Because the cylinder #1 is dead at idle and I'm suspecting the fuel injector being the culprit. At least, I'd like to swapped it with an other one to isolate the problem.

Thanks

Not hard Dennis..take out the two bolts from the rack that connects it to the engine (dont forget to decompress the system first by pressing the schrader valve on the right side of the rack).

Pull the whole rack up towards you with constant pressure, remove the electrical quick connector and voila.

Keep in mind before you do this job you should order the one seal and two "o" rings which connects the individual injectors in place.

One of the problems could be that the injector seal is not airtight and could be causing the miss. Also ensure that the electronic wire connected to the injector and wires to it are operating normally too.

I keep hearing that these injectors are very dependable... i know of only a few cases where they went bad.. but i think there was a physical defect on the unit..where it spins in the body of the injector and leaks gasoline

Hi there, thanks for the info.

I've swapped the injectors of cylinder #1 with the one of cylinder #2 and like you've recommended, I've replaced all "O" rings and seals for all injectors: no success, cylinder #1 still dead. So, it's not the injector.

I checked the compression on all cylinders: 180 psi (+/- 3 psi average). I also checked the voltage at the injector plug with a LED probe (light-emitting diode in series with a resistor) the results are identical on all injector plugs. Of course, I did 2 weeks ago a complete tune-up: plugs, ignition wires, rotor, distributor cap, fuel filter, air filter, all vacuum elbows (a couple of them were slightly rotten: I've replaced them all) but no changes, I'm still stuck with the same problem.

      Any ideas?

180 sounds right for a non turbo.. are you saying your bad cylinder is doing the same psi as the others?

I would get one of those pulse fuel injector lights to ensure the injector is firing right.. if its not the injector then it could be the connection to the injector itself.. given that you swapped the injector and it was working in the other cylinder.

They say if its not gas then it could be spark or air. So perhaps you should test the spark on the cylinder in question.

Did you do the tune up in response to this problem..or did you only suffer this problem after the tune up?

Test the spark plug in question by taking it out ..connecting it back to the lead.. putting it on the metal part of the engine block(after you take any gasoline off from removing the cylinders off)have someone turn the ignition and check for a crisp blue spark between the ignition gap and see if it works. (did you also replace the spark plug wires ? if not perhaps a swap of them again with another cylinder can isolate the problem.

Anyone else have any ideas to help?

Yes, 180 PSI is for ALL of them, cylinder #1 included.

I tested the injector signal with the connector unplugged because I have no test jig to test it out "in-circuit".

Yes, I did the tune-up in response to that problem. I've replaced everything in the ignition system: plugs, wires, rotor, cap ect. I tested the cylinder #1 plug by putting it on the metal part of the engine block and the spark was identical to the other cylinders: big & crisp.

I'll bring my oscilloscope in the garage saturday and I'll test the injector "in-circuit" in order to determine what is the problem, I'm suspecting now the ECU not "pushing" enough current to energize that injector. I'm not raving too much to do that test because I'll have to splice-out the injectors wires to be able to "read" the signal at least on 2 of them. Yuck

          keep you posted
