Another car for my family S80 2005

Happy New Year,

I am considering in purchasing a 2005 S80 2.9L sometime in the next month or two. Originally I wanted to get an XC70 AWD but I believe the maintanence on that would be quite costly if something goes wrong. I don't want sometime brand new because it would be out of our budget but I think a 2005 S80 might fit into our budget. Plus I have 2 very young children who might benefit from Volvo's safety. However I wanted to see if anyone out there would recommend this year and model in terms of common problems or mechanical challenges this vehicle might have that can be costly to fix. I hear there are electrical solenoid failures that are associated with this model. Does anyone out there have a 2005 S80 who has positive or negative experiences? Again, I'm buying this car for my wife to drive around with the kids. She is a stay at home mom and right now we only have the S90 which runs great.

Thank you.

Consumer Reports actually has the '05 S80 on its *Recommended* used cars list. Nevertheless, I would look for one with a Volvo extended warranty. Those puppies are very, very complex and well beyond the capabilities of most shade tree mechanics.

If you want safe and reliable, I would go for an S60 rather than an S80. The S80 with the T6 is too hot for the electrics in the engine compartment. Wtih 2 smaller children, I would also consider a Honda Odessey. Stay away from AWD unless you live in the mountains.
