97 850 alternator rebuild question 850 1997

Has anyone ever attempted to rebuild their alternator? Mine was starting to fail on these cold Maine nights and was only generating 12.8V - 13.1V. I ordered a voltage regulator with the integrated brushes and began the lengthy task of pulling the alternator. Upon opening the housing I see that the new one and old one are different in that the new one does not have the clip for what appears to have been a ground wire (red/white sleeve). The new one is is stamped 1197311213, the old one is 1197311520. Is this due to an upgrade in technology, or did I just waste $60?

Did you get your replacement from Volvo? Or FCP? There are upgrades, but if you stick with a good parts supplier you should be ok. BTW, you can replace the regulator-brushes without removing the alternator. A little cumbersome, but I have done it.

      97 850 alternator rebuild question 850 1997

Hello, I have a '96 850, the alternator didn't fail at once but kind of dropped what it was putting out just gradually. I have always had 240's and they were very easy to replace the brushes without even taking the belt off. i read here that you can do the same with the 850, but I can't hardly see the alt on this one. is it accessible from underneath? or does some the the other stuff on top have to come off. The 850 is much harder to work on than the good old 240's. Thanks

So long as the alternator bearings are good and quiet, you can replace the cover on the alternator which has the brushes builtin. Of course, with the engine being sideways there is very little room to work.

A good alternator shop can also do the 'rebuild', you don't have to go to Volvo.

          97 850 alternator rebuild question 850 1996

I am just now getting around to dealing with the alternator on my '96 850. I don't drive it in the winter so it just sat. I have found the brush holder kit on E-bay, but they list two different ones. Are there two types of alt's on these cars, and if there is how do I tell them apart. thanks.

I used Eeuroparts - same part number and image, but $30 cheaper. The Chilton manual made the process of removing the alternator appear deceptively simple. If I could start over, I'd remove the upper coolant hose and the oil level tube and remove the housing with a stubby screw driver as the regulator sits to the front of the engine.
