Front struts for a 2001 v70 T5 V70-XC70 2001

The strut mounts have failed on my 2001 V70 T5 at 97,000 miles. While am replacing them, is this the mileage at which the struts should be replaced too? I don't notice the tell-tale signs of leaking hydraulic fluid or excessive dive on stops. How does brand stack up? Many 960 owners (I am one too) are impressed with Monroe Sensa-Tracs, but I'm not sure how they perform in the front wheel drive cars. I don't need adjustable struts or hard sport damping. Thanks...
John

You have a T-5. I can't imagine downgrading a performance car with Monroe sensatracs. The Konis may be great. I put Bilstein HD all around on my 2001 V70 T5 and they are great. They are not harsh like the Bilstein HD shocks were on my pre 2001 850s and 70 series. The volvo suspemsion changed in 2001 and the shocks are different. So either Bilstein put different valving in the newrer shock or the nature of the suspension is different. My advice.....you have special car with about 250 hp of smooth power. Keep the suspension up to snuff to match the power.

Well, I wanted to get this project done this weekend and the Bilsteins and Konis are mail order items. Sooooo, I went to the Volvo dealership and bought the struts there. Since I have a good relationship with the parts department, they gave a me decent deal and lots of technical help. Beechmont Volvo in Cincinnati is a fantastic dealership. It feels like a new car now.

Rick, do you have a "lull" from a standing start in your '01? I never knew any better until I drove a friend's '02 V70 - way more responsive from 0mph than mine. The car has the new tranny control download, it was a little help, but not enough.

      Thanks to everyone,
      John

Mine was a 5 sp manual, and compared to the 1999 T5 V70 that I kept, the 2001 redesign feels very "isolated" and to me felt less responsive. But head to head these cars were objectively the same. The 2001 just felt less responsive...but it was/is the same. The best way i can put it....the 2001 was a passengers car and more comfy for riders, and the 1994 to 2000 turbos are drivers cars. The 2006 V50 T5 felt like a drivers' car too....but I opted for a jetta as a small buggy. The V50's felt nice, but for the money there were too many crappy details on the interior carpeting/floor (can't imagine spending $30,000 for a car that looks like design and manufacturing was never completed), and the marketing idiots at volvo wanna force an awd unit down your throat if you wanna T5 stick.

At your mileage your front struts are toast. Though you might not notice the difference as it's gradual degredation of your ride. You will notice a huge difference when you put new ones in. Check out: http://www.shox.com/appguide/shoxshop/productsdisplay.php
The Koni FSD are the rave on the other message boards. It stiffens on the highway and softens on city streets where there are more pot-holes, etc. Also, right now with free shipping. I know that these aren't cheap compared to the Monroe's but you are after all driving a Volvo, and a T5 to boot (personally I would get these with the Eibach spring kit, but that's me)!
On a separate note, shox.com can also set you up with other components like spring seats, strut mounts, etc. Not on their site, so you'll have to cal them.

The strut mounts failed in my V70 at 80K miles.

I installed new Monroe Sensa-Tracs 2 years ago when I replaced the mounts and I am quite pleased with them. Good (not the best) all around struts. Heck the price was unbeatable at Sears, $99.00 each installed and they installed the new mounts I brought for free. My indie wanted $380 for the job with me providing the new mounts.

Others will chime in with their favorite brands, but if price is an issue the Monroes are great.
