Lambda Light - where to start troubleshooting? S70

Uh oh, last night the lamba light came on in the 1998 S70. I can't see anything amiss under the hood - no visible disconnected hoses etc. The car does seem to be running rich, especially when cold. I know the lambda light indicates a fuel mixture problem, but where do I start my diagnosis?

Also the spark plugs were replaced 2 months ago with Volvo plugs from dealer, I also took off the throttle body and everything was clean in there at the time - very clean. I also replaced the air filter and cbin air filter at that time.

Thanks!

    Hi Tina,
The problem may also be the air pump during warm up. Get to an Autozone/Pepboys and get the codes read.
There is a 1" hose from the air cleaner box to the air pump. If the pump is working during the first couple of minutes after a cold start, you will be able to feel the air plusating through the hose if you squeeze it.

    Hi Tina,
you certainly checked all possible air leaks allready, the other ones are crankcase and valve box propper ventilation and then finally to check the O2 sensor itself this could help http://www.olyonline.com/o-21.htm

I suspect it might be the O2 sensor, I was thinking of replacing those with the last tune up but did not. Is it a DIY job?

Klaus, the air pump definitely comes on - always sounds like a vacuum cleaner turned on when idling, that it has done for the past 2 years so i assume it is the normal sound.

        Hi Tina,
never done this myself, but as it is running very hot it might be tight. I have seen a special tool(long pipe with openin one side for wires) for this to have a good grip over the sensor.
