Can I replace my hard plastic boots with the rubber boots?

I have to ask, why the hell would you want to? I replace the early style rubber boots all of the time in my shop, I keep two sets of each on the shelf because I have been known to do a couple sets a week. On the other hand I think I have only done two or maybe three sets of the hard plastic ones. When they do finally wear out they tend to crack right around where the clamp goes on the small end. The rubber ones always develope cracks down in the creases and then tear open and spew grease everywhere. Even when a plastic one dies it is relatively clean compared to the earlier rubber ones.

To answer your question though, yes you can. The first set I did I ordered up from my usual vendor and he sent me the horse crap rubber ones and I boomeranged that crap right back at him and ordered a set of the correct ones from the local Volvo dealer.

Explain. I don't know of plastic boots.
