Driver Side Wiper Makes Very Poor Contact on Windshield 850

Hey!

It's that time of year to replace windshield wipers, and I figured the new Innovision "curved" wiper blades would solve my issue of the left (driver side) windshield wiper with bad contact. I'm sure you have experienced this as well with your 850's? I've read on some other blogs that this is an issue.

The stories I heard from 3 others were that they creatively "bent" the windshield wiper arm slowly in order to make contact with the window.

Questions:

Is this possible?
Have you done it?
Does it work?
Have you heard of this?
Any and all information is greatly appreciated,

Thank you all,
David

The original Volvo wiper arm slowly bends in use and eventually doesn't put enough pressure on the blade to keep in contact with the window. Poor engineering work, pure and simple. You can rebend the arm which I did once with some success, but a few months later it had bent itself back. Then I bought a Scan Tech replacement arm which has lasted at least four years now.

Volvo seems to have trouble designing some of it's cast metal parts. The outer door handle sections of 240 door handles are also prone to changing shape all by themselves!

My Swedish-born Indie used the approach (that is offered by these two) on my '96. He said it's due to the weak aluminum used in the frames. Over time it just flattens out. He just used some judicious taps with the hammer...after putting a towl under the blade to semi-protect the glass.

My '95 had the same problem. As was suggested I stopped the drivers side wiper when it was at max stroke. It was then about 1/2 inch off the glass. I proped the arm up with a 2 x 4 and bent it enough to again make contact with the windshield. Looks a little odd but it's worked fine now for almost a year.

I just bent the wiper arm a little and it seems to work fine. I bent it between the blade and the hinge part. Sometimes I twist the arm a little to eliminate chatter.
