Gss Smell 850 1995

What could be causing gas smell, usually after a fill up and stronger in the back seat. It is a 1995 5 SPD 850 GLT. Plan to take it in anyway, since I am not driving with an obvious leak or fumes accumulating. Wondering if should have it towed in or if there is something obvious that I can check before driving it

thanks

GP Sandhoo

I've got this same problem on my 850. I don't know, but I'm told that there is some kind of "overflow" valve in or near the gas tank and that when cars get old the seals don't work well anymore - therefore when you fill up all the way it leaks. Next time you fill up, look under the back of the car and see if it's leaking. Mine leaks like a waterfall if I fill it all the way so I usually look at the gauge, estimate how much will get it 90% full and stop there. I do plan on fixing it, the fumes are horrible and it's kind of scary to start your car up with a puddle of gas below.

I had the same problem........dealer charged 300.00 for some tube at the top of the tank......only leaked when full.

There was a recall on the 850 tanks. Have you checked?

Klaus is right, there was a recall. I took it into the dealer in Portland and they "fixed" whatever the recall was for - however my leaky gas tube at the top of the tank was not part of the recall. How convenient. They also wanted to rip my motor out to replace the rear main seal even though it was a clogged flame trap (3 dollar part) that was causing excess pressure in the system which made oil spray from every place it could. Through the brickboard, and my mechanic we solved the flame trap problem - no thanks to Jim Fisher Volvo. Beware all the other problems they'll "find" when you take it in for the recall - but I'd fix it as soon as you can because I believe it's a safety issue.

I guess you need to find a good indie to drop the tank and replace the hose.
