replacing struts, what else? S70

Our 2000 S70 has 170 K miles. The struts, shocks, and strut mounts are original. The front end of the car has never had ball joints or sway bar end links. Should I change the struts, mounts, and rear shocks? There aren't really any noises from the front end.

With the miles I think that would help it. Our '97 850 has had new lower control arms and mounts, but it is still on its original struts at 150 K miles.

I'm just trying to get an idea of what needs to be done on the S70 at this time.

Thanks,
Dave

The ball joints tend to wear faster than the struts. Have a reputable shop do an alignment, that will tell you if the ball joints need replacing. As for the struts, so long as the car handles well, I would just put the money aside and wait. And, yes, I would do all 4 corners at the same time.

The S70 is getting a little sloppy with handling. I didn't know if the ball joints could be tested by grabbing the wheel with it off of the ground and trying to rock it back and forth.

      Thanks for your suggestion.

I replaced my struts and shocks at 110K--made a significant omprovement in handling, particularly in directional control on bumps. This is not a tough DIY job--you can get a spring compressor from Autozone at no charge and there are some excellent instructions on volvospeed. And yes, if you do this, you should replace the mounts while you are in there. I found the heavy duty endlinks from IPD to be excellent.
