Has anyone installed the IPD skidplate? Is the attachment trustworthy? 850

I've been interested in installing an IPD-made skid plate on my daughter's new car. However, when I read the instructions (at their website, in .pdf), it seems like the plate is largely held up and supported by merely a rubber plug that, when a bolt is tightened, swells to hold itself in a hole by friction. It's rather disconcerting that there's no ample attachment with a trustworthy bolt.

Have any of you installed this protective plate -- and if so, any critique of this attachment method?

Thanks.

I purchased the Volvo skid plate and had one installed on my C70 and 850. The Volvo OEM part is a grate-type design, and I didn't want any problems getting service done at the dealer. The volvo one as worked for fine for me, saving a few impacts from driveways.

At the dealer, I was told the only other customer to request the plate before me was the Michigan State Police, who ordered it for their S70. Works for me.

I had no idea that Volvo offered their own skid plate! .... 850

I had no idea that Volvo offered their own skidplate! I never saw any in an accessory booklet, but I will look into it!

By the way, since you have a Volvo version, does it attach differently than the one I described that is sold by IPD? If there is a difference, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

      Thanks.

Except for the sway bars ..this is another great improvement for the vehicle. It has saved my butt (oil pan) in more than one occasion ..since the car is so low and I have a lead foot in the bumps.

The rubber connectors in the front seem like they would come out but they are a very thoughful design and take some effort to remove if the need arises.

I lost one of the bolts a ways back and IPD sent a replacement set gratis ..

I agree that the expanding rubber grommets on the front don't look like much but they do the job very well and it's impossible to pull off without undoing the bolt that goes through it. My suggestion is to get the skid plate and don't worry about it.

My parents 850 has the IPD skid plate, and honestly it has to be one of, if not the most impoprtant, purchase the car has received. I know that two 10mm bolts hold the plate in front, while in the rear I can't remember how it is set up. I will try to take a look tomorrow and get back to you. Either way, it (being the skid plate)holds up without issue, and is a terrific insurance policy in protecting the underbelly of the car. My recommendation is to purchase it a.s.a.p.

I don't doubt for a minute that it can be a valuable protection. But it's disconcerting to read the installation instructions,...

      http://www.ipdusa.com/pdf/PI-084skidplate.pdf

...which explain that the front edge of the plate is merely held by a rubber plug that, in the process of having a bolt through it tightened, is being compressed in the long axis and therefore swells out sideways; and that this swelling, against the walls of a hole (and therefore mere friction) serves to hold the plate in place.

Perhaps I'm being a little cautious, but my daughter lives 3,000 miles from me and has no one (with mechanical skills) to make any "adjustments" should the mounting need some adjustment or followup attention. I'm flying out to visit her in a month, and I thought I would order the plate (shipped to her) and install it on her car when I'm there. But I was really expecting a more trustworthy means of attaching the plate -- i.e., some means that I can just install and forget, with total confidence that it won't fail her.

Your brakes, through "mere friction", keep you from blasting through stoplights don't they? Also step 7 says you can use a sheet metal screw if you are not satisfied with the well nuts.
