Throttle clean-up?? 850 1995

After having my car at the dealer yesterday for a trans fluid leak they always find the time to list some recommendations that also need fixing. They told me that I needed to clean up the throttle linkage under the hood as the gas pedal sticks a little when you first depress it from a green light. Is this as easy as spraying some sort of cleaning solution from a can in that area? Woudl like to save the $110 they wanted to charge me to do it.

Every time I change the oil, I unscrew the aircleaner duct going to the throttle body and spray the throttle plate with Valvoline carb. cleaner. Throttle plate is very clean, and I never have problems with the plate sticking anymore.

You can really do a much better job cleaning after taking if off. The associated flame trap device also needs cleaning and the vapor recovery line fitting is probably plugged and needs drilling out. "Bay 13" on the Volvospeed site has a good description of the process. If the dealer is going to do this then $110 isn't too far off although it's alot more than the $0 you would charge yourself.

I had a sticking pedal and found it was not the linkage but rather the throttle bore itself that was full of hard deposits. I have had to clean it about every 3 or 4 years. You can tell if it is the throttle body by disconnecting the little ball joint from it - you will be able to feel where the resistance really is. If you find the same issue on your car, you can remove the fresh air hose between the air flow meter and the throttle body and get to it in situ, though it might be easier to remove the throttle body for a thorough cleaning.

I used some penetrant like Liquid Wrench to soften the stuff a bit, but I needed to use a prod (a wood chopstick worked pretty well) to dislodge the resistant pieces. There was a lot.

Before you can spray anything, you have to remove the cover. Those Volvo guys should do that gratis! It only takes a few minutes to spray it with WD40 and wipe it down.
Make sure the back side of the gas peddle is clean and any hinges lubed in that area.
