I Can't Fill the Tank! V70-XC70 1999

On my 1999 v70xc: when I try to fill the tank, the pump stops after one gallon. It is impossible to forcefeed more; the fuel just pools in the filler neck and slowly seeps down. I tried different gas stations, but the same problem. Is there some check valve or vacuum breaker that I should check? You guys know all this stuff...

PS. thanks for the forum help on all my previous issues - the dealer really CAN program remotes bought on ebay for the 1999 model year!

Is your gas gauge working properly? It sounds like you have a full tank. There are some pumps that have dirty nozzles that shut off at full volume, but a filler neck that gets clogged with gas is not normal. If it is full, the charcoal container will fill up with about 1 quart of gas and then overflow and set off error codes.
Fill a spare gas tank and strap it down nice and secure and go for an hour's drive - about 3 gallons. Then tank up again at a gas station and check the amount.

Yep on the error codes - p0422, p0446, and p0453 read. Two had to do with evap system and pressure - the other was a cat conv thing.

I read about a Canister Purge valve and evap canister shutoff valve in my manual, and how they can affect the cat conv diagnostic as well as other evap functions, but I don't get it. Before reading the codes, I could only put 3/4 gal in before the pump stopped, so I drove to another station and tried their pump. Again, 3/4 gal was all it would accept. Next, I get a code reader and clear the codes, drove 5 miles, and tried again. This time, 11 gallons, no problem. Is there a blockoff or shutoff for the fuel filler?

      The mystery continues... recap:

      1. Check engine light came on (couldn't find my code reader).
      2. Filled tank, light went off after 2 trips around town.
      3. at 6 gal remaining, light came on again.
      4. Noticed fuel gauge varying between 2 and 6 gal intermittently.
      5. Tried to refuel, unable as above.
      6. Noticed exaggerated vacuum sound when cap removed, and fuel tank sucked up off of straps when I looked underneath (less after opening gas cap).
      7. Read and cleared codes.
      8. Drove and refueled; normal except I expected it to take a few gallons more to top off...

Is it the canister purge valve? Where is it? How can I test it? Sorry for being longwinded, and I really appreciate your help.

        I Can't Fill the Tank! V70-XC70 1999

I just remembered the same thing happened to my daughter's 850 last year. I had a terrible time filling the tank, my daughter complained that it took forever. I had the bad habit of overfilling it and then driving the 1 mile home to let it sit for a day or two.
After I stopped over filling the tank, the problem went away. Conjecture on my part was that the line from the tank to the cannister was full of liquid gasoline and when I tried to add more gas to the tank, there was no where for the vapors to go except back out of the filler pipe. The back pressure was enough to slop gas back onto the nozzle and turn the pump off.
Wait before you run off to a dealer to get it "fixed" and clear your codes for a month.

The charcoal cannister purge valve is part of your problem. If you consistantly overfill the tank, the excess liquid gas will flow into the charcoal cannister and fill it up. It is made to only handle gas vapors, not the liquid stuff.
Before you have the valve replaced and new vacuum lines installed, I suggest driving it through at least 2 tank fulls of gas - do not overfill, when the pump handle clicks just stop filling. This may dry out the charcoal and save you a bit of money.
If there is liquid in the cannister, the dealer will charge you for a new cannister! $$$. If driving a lot does not clear some of the codes, then save money by reposting here and asking for help specifying the valve and other parts.

Good advice all, and I'll let you know how it progresses. Thanks again! I attached the VADIS page that had the info I referred to before - if anything else comes to mind please let me know. Brian
