E-code lenses only ? V70-XC70 1998

I have read varying opinions here about switching out to E-codes. Some say swapping only the lens results in significant improvement in light thrown on the roadway. Others say switching only the lens results in minimal improvement, and that instead, you need to switch the entire headlight assembly so that you have both the E-code lenses and reflectors, in order to receive the full benefit.

I'm interested in hearing "personal experiences" (not what you've "heard") either way. I have acquired one E-code lens, but before I spend the money for the other one, I'm very interested in hearing first-hand testimonials as to the potential results if I change out ONLY the lenses, and retain the north american headlight assemblies.

I'm also still looking for one passenger-side E-code lens, with gasket and clips, to fit a '98 V70.

Thanks !

E-code lenses only ? V70-XC70 1998

timc,

Do NOT touch the reflectors or try to clean them!

The reflective finish is applied by vapor deposit and using ANY cleaners will remove it and/or scratch it.

Use either compressed air at low volume or a soft, clean brush to gently remove any debris.

Thanks,
Bryan

E-code lenses only ? V70-XC70 1998

The 2003+ C70 (clear) E-codes are by most reviews the best of the bunch and bolt right in on all the 1998-2000 SVC70s. They're pricey, but one accident avoided and they've paid for themselves.

FCP Groton has the Scan-Tech E-code lenses.

E-code lenses only ? - will have to do a test V70-XC70 1998

The controversy about the headlights continues. It is a pity that the USA version of the V70 and S70 came with such compromised lights that owners are forced to look for alternatives. I think the only way to decide if the lens assembly mounted on the USA base unit will work to your satisfaction is to try it. If you have one lens, install it and do a test to compare with the USA stock unit. As for comparing with a full European Hella unit, that will be difficult if you don't have a friend nearby with the Hellas installed in his car.

I opted to buy the full European assemblies. I could not find a vendor in the USA anywhere, despite many calls and emails, so a friend brought the units back from Sweden when he returned from vacation. Remarkable improvement. I also installed the Phillips VisionPlus bulbs to get a bit more power. You can order them from Autolamps Online (http://www.autolamps-online.com/home.htm). The European Hella units also have an extra bulb, the city light, which our cars are already wired to use.

If you are in western Mississippi, come to see my lamps. I'll even provide coffee and biscotti.

I was going to pull the one lens and do just that. Does the entire HL assembly have to come out to switch lenses ? I didn't immediately see how the whole assembly unbolted (although I did run out of time to look....). Are the lenses glued in or simply clipped on the front onto the gasket ? Pulling off the clips didn't seem to do much......

Unclip lenses V70-XC70 1998

I have never unclipped the lenses, but I am sure you will have to remove the entire hearlight assembly from the car first. This will be a good opporetunity to clean the lamp assembly and get rid of dust and mud. There are three bolts that you can access from the rear. A bit hard to see, and you'll need an extension for your socket. Check the archives for a week or so back, because another Volvo owner asked about how to change the headlights.
