NHTSA recall at last S80

Fellow Brickboarders
It is all over the Swedish newspapers.
NHTSA is forcing Volvo to recall 360.000 cars in the US
from the MY 99-02 due to the faliure of the dreaded
ETM's. It is expected to cost the company SEK 1 Billion
$ 133 million.
It is nice to see that the voices of the people finally
being heard.

From what I have seen this is just the half-step software patch fix. Volvo is still trying to avoid actually replacing all the questionable ETMs. Ford pulled the same kind of stunt with it's high failure rate ignition modules and engine fire causing brake switches (neither used in Volvos).

Ford has a long history of doing everything possible to try and wiggle out of these self-created situations.

It sounds like the recent ETM fix from this year is now an offical recall.

The news is that the "Fix as fails" now has turned into a
      mandantory recall.

So is this just the software update, or is this a replacing of the ETM?

This from the NHTSA web site:

            Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSTALL THE CURRENT SOFTWARE UPGRADE ONTO THE INVOLVED VEHICLES. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS RECALL. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLVO AT 1-800-458-1552.

I had my S70 done last summer during the Volvo voluntary recall. I never had any problem with the ETM. Since the software change the car is much more responsive, almost as much as my 96 Turbo. The throttle seems to be more sensitive than before. So much so that the RPMs jump with the least pressure on the throttle.

New problem: Runaway Acceleration (viz., Audi 3000)? :-) S80

Wow. Your remark, "...The throttle seems to be more sensitive than before. So much so that the RPMs jump with the least pressure on the throttle....", almost sounds as if it's inviting a new "runaway acceleration defect". Next we'll hear little old ladies sobbing, "I only gently touched the gas pedal, and the car just took off and crushed all those people!"

Just kidding! And glad it made such an improvement.
