1998 S70 T5 Timing Belt Question

I have about 152k miles on the vehicle and I will be putting its 3rd timing belt in soon. Do I need to replace the timing belt tensioner (Mine is the automatic type). I assume I will need to replace the two pulleys also.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
doug

    1998 S70 T5 Timing Belt Question

    Hi,
I've planned to replace only the tensioner and pulley every second time belt change but now I have a 'dry metal sqeek' for 10 secs when starting winter cold and thus will eliminate water pump as the source when changing the belt next time very soon.

    1998 S70 T5 Timing Belt Question

Why are you doing a 3rd one? The replacement interval is every 70K miles...so if done on time, 210K miles is your third one. Now, if you're counting the number of timing belts in the car, you'll be on your third one at 140K miles...and you're late. If the later is the case, HURRY to get it done ASAP.

      1998 S70 T5 Timing Belt Question

I bought the car used and put a timing belt on at 89k, so I'm due at 159k which is coming up. It looks like I will be replacing the auto tensioner and pulleys too.

      thanks for your help!

        1998 S70 T5 Timing Belt Question

Yes, replace those and consider the water pump and gasket too. They usually die right before 200K miles and it's better to be safe than sorry.

          1998 S70 T5 Timing Belt Question

Thanks MadeInJapan, I plan to replace the water pump too while I'm working in that area. I'm surprised the water pump has lasted that long... seems like most domestic cars need water pumps at about 100k miles!!

            1998 S70 T5 Timing Belt Question

I would really appreciate it if you could let me know how the water pump replacement goes. I did mine about 5 months back. I had a hard time getting the old gasket material off. I would be interested in knowing if others have similar experiences.

    1998 S70 T5 Timing Belt Question

Most people change the tensioner after the second T-Belt change. At the third T-Belt change would be a good time to change the tensioner and the pulleys. I assume you are talking about having the hydraulic tensioner?
