Transmission locking and slipping 850 1996

I just installed a new driver's side drive shaft and now smell a oily smell in the heater when driving at slower speeds around town. The worst is that there are times when I can't get it to go from park to reverse. I can put it in the selector but no shifting occurs. If I rev the motor it will grab and jerk backwards. If I shift into drive right after that, there is a loud whirring noise in the tranny as I drive forward. If I put it in park and then try it again, it might be just fine, or do it again. There is no consistency to this at all. I am getting the oily smell consistently though. Don't know if it is leaking from the tranny or what. I just can't put the installed drive shaft and the oily smell together and pin in on anything.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

    wow, not good.

Are you sure that your splines locked and slid in well together when you intalled it? Almost seems like it isn't fully seated and maybe your seals are leaking. Have you checked the tranny fluid?

Mechanic says he did everything just fine. Am taking it to a tranny shop to have a diagnostic done on it. I know working on those things is not a cheap event. Will try to get in touch with Erie Volvo and see what a used tranny will run me if necessary.
