Loose yoke on steering column.

Hi,

I have a '98 S70 with about 90K miles on the clock.

The yoke that is installed with shear bolts and holds the ignition, turn signal and wiper switches moves when I hit the turn signal switch or put the wiper switch into the intermittent position.

Is this a common problem? Can it be fixed without drilling out and replacing the shear bolts?

Thanks,
Bryan

    Loose yoke on steering column.

This is NOT common. Was the car wrecked at one time? If the bolts are loose, you are correct that they would have to be drilled out and replaced. It's been a while since I had the clamshell off my 850/70s so I wonder if it could be anything else that could be tightened.

      Loose yoke on steering column.

      Klaus,

The car was struck from behind by an SUV several years ago.

I've looked and don't see anything else that could be tightened.

      Thanks,
      Bryan

        Loose yoke on steering column.

The steering columns are meant to collapse when you get in a front end accident, but if you were hit from behind the driver could have exerted enough force to move the steering wheel.

If i understand you correctly is the whole steering wheel loose?

The steering wheels are also telescopic as well as tiltable. If you do not tighten the adjustable lever properly your steering wheel will suddenly seem like its dropping into the dash. Could this be the issue?

Loose yoke on steering column. Steering wheel lock?

          CarVolvo,

The whole steering wheel is not loose. The tilt/telescoping mechanism is secure as well.

The movement (L&R) is only the yoke or bracket that surrounds the column and to which the turn signal, wiper, and ignition switch attach.

I think there was a campaign to replace some defective steering wheel locks on the early '98's.

I don't know if this is a safety issue where the locking pin could engage while the car is being driven. Or, if it is just an annoyance to have the plastic cowl move and vibrate when the turn signal or wiper switches are used.

          Thanks for your response.

          Bryan
