Curious slow idle problem on 94 855

I'm wondering if you good people could point me in the right direction. This is the first cold morning we've had in Atlanta, just above freezing (that's cold for down here). As I was driving to work in my 94 855, I noticed that whenever I would stop, the idle would slow down to about 600 RPMs, then climb back up to 900RPMs. I have a lot of stop and go traffic, and it felt like the car was going to die, so I pulled into a parking lot and idled the car. It idled fine. I sat for about five minutes, and the car didn't do anything strange at all. So, I pulled out of the parking space and merged into traffic. No sooner did I come to the stop sign at the edge of the parking lot then it started again- the idle slowed down to ~600 RPMS, then back up to ~900. Every time I stopped, the same thing would happen. At one point, I turned the car off for five minutes to get some coffee, came out, same thing. It was really unnerving.

Anyone experienced anything like this before?

I assume the check engine light is not on - otherwise you would read the codes. I would begin with ignition - are plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor all up to standard?

Beyond that, is the car hard to start at all (needing several tries or long cranking)? And when first started cold, is the idle ok for the first minute or so?

Another area to investigate is dirty throttle body and/or idle air valve.

    Does your tranny shift properly?

You may have a vacuum leak or any of several other problems - but I would expect then the check engine light would go on, if it is bad enough for you to notice.

Easy to crank, shifts okay. Seemed to idle okay in the driveway, but then it idles okay after stopping. I had a couple of codes last week- knock sensor and the transmission program switch. No more codes so far. I'm very curious to drive it home this afternoon and will let you know how it handles when it's warmer.
